Have human skills

As a field communication technician, you will be interacting with customers on a daily basis and must have excellent written and oral communication skills. In a customer’s home or company, you’re not just a technician; you are also a customer service representative. Sometimes you may encounter angry customers whose services are not working and you may not only have to solve the problem but also deal with angry customers in the process. You usually have a deadline to finish a job in a certain amount of time and you need to have good time management skills and a strong work ethic.

Excellent physical condition

Most of the time you will be working outdoors, installing lines and connecting the cable and internet from the outside. You need to be willing to work in extreme cold or heat, and depending on your area and time of year, you may have to deal with both. Communications technicians should be in good physical condition and able to lift heavy equipment, lie in small spaces, climb ladders and electric poles, and work on their feet every day. You may work long hours, including weekends and evenings, and you may be on call, so you should be flexible with your time.
