Education

Post-secondary education in electronics, telecommunications or computers is generally required for telecommunication technicians.

Technical instructions in basic electronics, telecommunications and computer science offered in community colleges and technical schools can be particularly helpful. Most programs lead to a degree or related degree in electronic repair, computer science or related subjects.

Some employers prefer to hire candidates with a related qualification, particularly for positions such as head office technicians, headend technicians and those working with commercial communication systems.
Training

Once hired, telecommunication technicians receive hands-on training, usually lasting a few months. The training involves a combination of classroom instruction and manual work with an experienced technician. In these cases, workers learn the internal components of the equipment and the tools needed to repair it. Technicians who have completed post-secondary education often require less assistance in the workplace than those who do not.
